Four classic Ford GTs headline the 66 lots at the Shannons Melbourne Winter
Classic Auction with a stunning and genuine 1971 Ford Falcon XY GT Phase III
Sedan expected to fetch well over half a million dollars.
Delivered new in 1971 and just one of 39 Ultra White GT-HO Phase IIIs built,
the Phase III with 110,068 miles since new has been thoroughly checked over by
leading GT experts and is regarded as being a very clean example of this ultra
desirable Ford muscle car.
Whether it is the fact that only about half of the 300 ever built remain in
original condition, or that it was the ultimate Falcon GT in terms of raw
performance and not to mention the fastest four-door sedan in the world at the
time, the iconic status of the much-loved Phase III cannot be mistaken.
A recent auction in March saw a similar GT-HO Phase III fetch $680,000, a
result that ensures all eyes will be on the Shannons hammer from 7.00pm on
Monday 4 June at the Cheltenham Showroom, 321 Warrigal Rd, Cheltenham.
With matching numbers, the Phase III was repainted in the original colour
several years ago while the interior trim remains original. The car sits on the
correct style Globe wheels, with matching spare and comes with the desirable
numberplates HOXY-71.
Not alone in the Ford GT stable, the Phase III is joined by a striking
vermillion fire 1971 XY GT Falcon valued around $150,000 and a 1967 XR GT Falcon
expected to fetch around $50,000.
A stunning and genuine, one-owner 1974 XB GT Sedan XB GT is the perfect
vehicle to represent the final GT in the auction and the end of an era as the
final chapter in the legendary Ford GT story. Finished in a stunning colour
scheme of onyx black with silver touches and a very rare white interior, the
final of the GTs is expected to sell between $35,000-$45,000, however early
strong interest has indicated this could sell higher.
Also under the hammer is a pair of replicas representing sensational value
compared to their original counterparts.
While the Ferrari 250 GTO, currently priced around the $US5-7 million, is out
of the mark for most enthusiast, the Datsun 240Z, 250GTO Replica for around
$25,000-$35,000 is certainly within reach of far more people.
Painstakingly constructed by a professional mechanical engineer in 2002-2003
using all new or reconditioned parts, this sensational 250 GTO copy was built
using a re-skinned 1972 240Z chassis and is ready to be enjoyed for between
$24,000 and $32,000.
The Cobra, now priced up to $2 million for an original, a beautifully
representation of the classic is the 1996 DRB Cobra Replica Roadster
($34,000-$40,000), fitted with a recently rebuilt 302 Windsor V8 mated to a C4
automatic transmission. First registered in 1996 this blue with white stiping
roadster has travelled less than 15,000 kilometres.
A range of rare Victorian number plates will also be auctioned, most notably
the Vic license plate 47 valued between $260,000-$320,000 and the plate 246,
ideal for Ferrari 246 owners between $70,000-$90,000.
All vehicles, number plates and memorabilia can be viewed online at www.shannons.com.au and also at the
Shannons Cheltenham Showroom on the weekend of June 2-3 from 9am-5pm.
