On the eve of the 2006 Paris Motor Show, Audi has unveiled its R8
supercar. Following is the text of the speech delivered by Audi’s Chairman, Dr
Martin Winterkorn at the world premiere.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
With the launch of the R8, Audi has reached the highest level of the
automotive world. The world of sports cars. We now address the most demanding
group of international customers.
People who want to own the most well-crafted, precision objects. In the
automotive arena, the Audi R8 is such a car.
We now address a successful elite who prefer a brand with a style all of its
own. And Audi does have a distinct identity. Design, dynamics and craftsmanship
are signature elements for us. And we combine these to create objects which can
only come from Audi, the signature brand.
In terms of design, for example, we have created a dress code for our cars.
Audi vehicles are neither brash, nor do they seek to hide their dynamics.
So why do we believe that the R8 demonstrates craftsmanship and quality?
Because the drivetrain and chassis all have a unique precision.
The Audi R8 has:
- a high-revving V8 FSI engine
- quattro permanent four-wheel
- an aluminium body
- and options like adaptive dampers and ceramic brakes.
All have been developed to ensure optimum driving dynamics. As a result, the
R8 offers a superb driving experience in every speed range. And provides an even
more intense experience of the brand, which supports one of our key ambitions
for the future.
Over two decades ago, Ferdinand Piëch began the process that took Audi into
the premium segment.
He started the quattro, TDI and aluminium car body projects. Technologies
that remain at the heart of Audi. Thanks to Dr. Piech’s vision, Audi is now seen
as a benchmark in the premium segment for technology, design and craftsmanship.
With a more intense experience of Audi – using cars like the R8 – we want to
go further ...and become the leader of the premium segment.
After ten record years in a row, Audi is a proven success story. And we are
set to continue in this direction. When we created the original TT, we got
creative people around the world interested in Audi.
Now, Audi is the brand for leaders in the creative world. They like the way
our cars set trends and how they combine power with efficiency – without
compromise.
The factors that made the TT a success are now found in the entire Audi
range. And they find their ultimate expression in the ultimate form of vehicle –
the mid-engined sports car.
Ladies and gentlemen, the R8 project has been a very personal one. I started
it when I returned to Audi as chairman in 2002. I have overseen the design and
engineering teams for the past four years. Everyone has been looking forward to
this day, the world premiere of our first mid-engined sports car. It is a key
moment in the history of Audi.
